Name of different parts
1 最先端部 (さいせんたんぶ)剣先(剣先) === Tip (Tip of the blade) 2 切っ先 (きっさき)又は 刃部 (はぶ) === Tapering portion 3 横手筋 (よこてすじ)未定 === Not determined yet 4 剣身 (けんしん) === Blade shaft (Metal body) 5 尾部 (びぶ)又は 剣尾 (けんび) === Tail (tail of the blade). Roughly one third of the blade from the tail end. 6 巻き物 (まきもの)=== Threading (of string, fabric, or leather) 7 剣底 === The tail end 8 剣の太さ (けんのふとさ) === Diameter of the blade measured at shortest angle 9 剣面 (けんめん) === Side of the blade 10 剣底側面 (けんていそくめん) === Side of the blade at the tail end 11 指置き(ゆびおき) === Finger resting area 12 重心 === CG (Center of gravity)
"(Shuriken) Blade" or "Blade body" mean the whole blade including threading or other tail attachments.
"Blade shaft" (Metal body) means the iron part.
When I talk about "length", "weight", or "Center of Gravity", I use the entire blade to get the figure, while "the diameter" doesn't take threading or covering into consideration and measure only the metal body.
The diameter of theaad covered part should be noted separately, as it can be complex.
The "Center of Gravity" is measured by hanging the Shuriken blade by fine string.
Please notice the difference of "The tail end" and "The side of teh tail end". Otherwise, you may misunderstand the explanation for some throwing methods.
To avoid confusion, I call roughly one third of the rear portion as "tail", while "the tail end" means literally the very end of shuriken.
When I want to explain "fore" or "aft", I'd refering from CG location.
We have to use these terms to explain and understand various throwing methods of Mumyo-Ryu with precision.
The name of throwing methods
Jikishin-Niten-Dahou (Straight flying two points throwing method)
Throwing multiple blades at once (two, three...)
Haneage-Dahou (Snap-up method)
All of these are subtly different in the way. There are shurikens of certain length and/or center of gravity that doesn't go well with some of the methods.
